Suzette
Population : 130 inhabitants ( the Suzetiers)
Surface : 675 hectares / Altitude : 425 metres / 25 km from Orange, 43 km from Avignon
Dominating the famous Dentelles de Montmirail Massif, the village is on the hillside at an altitude of 410 metres, in the middle of the Saint Amand cirque, thus marvellously situated for those who enjoy lovely views. With a 360° panorama, from Suzette you can admire the Ventoux, the Alpilles, St. Amant and of course, the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain chains and even sometimes on a clear day, the Popes’ Palace in Avignon.
At the crossroads before the village, you can’t miss the huge panoramic table. From the road, you will see Suzette appear amidst the terraces of vines, surrounded by sumptuous scenery.
In the village, you can wander around and delight in the picturesque little streets. You will be able to quench your thirst at the Coquelicots bar-reataurant whose terrace is a true belvedere. The houses making Suzette are few, but their harmonious stone architecture give much style to the village.
You will, of course, be able to take many of the hiking paths. On the road going to Barroux, alleys of cypress trees bordering fields of vines artistically planted, make for a true “Provençal” cliché, a lovely walk indeed!
There are no remains, unfortunately, of the fortified castle of Suzette which once was the culminating fortress of the Orange Principality. Destroyed in 1563, it was basically repaired in the middle of the 17th century, but seemingly, it did not survive its transfer to the French Kingdom as it had lost its strategic interest.
Historical Vestiges to See
- The church is a jewel of Romance art.
The Suzette church is one of the prettiest rural Romance churches in the county, putting aside of course, the very special Notre Dame d’Aubune church. With its original layout in the shape of a cross, its apse and its two cul-de-four absidiol vaults, its arrow loophole- shaped windows through which you can see the silhouette of the Ventoux mountain, its broken vaulted nave, its simple quarter-rounded cornice as the only decoration, an archetype of pure and beautiful Romance art.
Panoramic Table
Entirely made of ceramic, it indicates all directions from the village to the nearest cities as well as others far away, for example, Geneva (245km), Grenoble (135km), Milan (350 km)…as the crow flies, of course.
