An unusual and precious land
Throughout time, different layers of sediment were deposited pending on the whims of nature and climate.
First of all, there was sand from the Massif Central transported by rivers. Then limestone and marl in warm sea waters, and finally, the capital phase under a climate having become extremely arid: salt, gypsum, red clay and ochre little by little covered the land.
This triad formed the “Trias” which was also covered in time by thousands of meters of sediment.
A natural conservatory of Mediterranean essences, this site protects the vineyard growing between 100 and 500 metres altitude. The terroir is made up of Oxford marl, Upper Cretaceous and Trias soils, unique in the Rhone Valley.
The variability of geological conditions makes for a configuration of micro-climates with original agronomic notes, thus allowing the expression of particular viticulture characteristics favouring a diversity of grape varieties.
- Small-grained Muscat grapes: “The bees’ vineyard” as Pliny the Elder said, finds here a superb balance between maturity and finesse. The elegance of its aromas makes it a beauty spot of the Rhone Valley.
- Black Grenache grapes: the basic grape variety of Rhone Valley AOC wines, resists drought and wind well. Its rich phenol composition (red fruit, liquorice, and spices) and intensity make it impossible to circumvent.
- Syrah grapes: originating from the Dauphine, is characterized by its deep purple colour. Its aromatic potential (small red and black fruit, peppery mint, liquorice and coffee) and its resistance to time, make it highly appreciated in blending.
- Mourvedre grapes are very demanding concerning heat and exposure to light. Its colour, its capacity as an antioxidant inhibitor, its aromatic properties (black fruit, leather, undergrowth) make it well appreciated for a good opening up of the wines.
- The secondary grape varieties: Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise and certain white grape varieties complete the palette available to producers to personalize and create their own image in wines.
